When people think of eating disorders, anorexia and bulimia often come to mind. However, several other eating disorders deserve attention as well, including Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) and Binge Eating Disorder (BED). Whatever the type, disordered eating causes significant distress, from being ashamed to eat in front of others to serious health consequences.
Types of Eating Disorders
ARFID (Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder)
ARFID involves limiting the amount or type of food eaten, but unlike anorexia, it's not driven by body image concerns. People with ARFID may avoid foods based on sensory characteristics, fear of choking, or lack of interest in eating.
Binge Eating Disorder (BED)
BED involves recurring episodes of eating large quantities of food, often quickly and to the point of discomfort. It's accompanied by feelings of shame, guilt, and loss of control -- but without the purging behaviors seen in bulimia.
Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder (OSFED)
This category includes eating disorders that don't meet the full criteria for anorexia, bulimia, or BED but still cause significant distress and impairment.
