3 Things You Never Knew About Meditation

You've probably heard of meditation, a practice that focuses on clearing your mind to improve your overall well-being. But how familiar are you with it? Here are three things you never knew about meditation.

1. Meditation Has Been Around for Thousands of Years

While meditation has become increasingly popular in recent years, it's actually an ancient practice. The earliest written records of meditation date back thousands of years, with roots in Hindu traditions of Vedantism around 1500 BCE. Buddhist meditation practices also have a long history, with records dating back to the 5th century BCE.

2. There Are Many Different Types of Meditation

When most people think of meditation, they picture someone sitting cross-legged with their eyes closed. But there are actually many different types of meditation, including:

  • Mindfulness meditation -- Focusing on the present moment
  • Guided meditation -- Following verbal instructions from a teacher
  • Transcendental meditation -- Using a mantra to settle the mind
  • Loving-kindness meditation -- Directing well-wishes toward yourself and others
  • Body scan meditation -- Systematically focusing on different body parts
  • Walking meditation -- Practicing mindfulness while walking
  • 3. Meditation Has Proven Health Benefits

Research has shown that meditation can provide numerous health benefits, including:

  • Reduced stress and anxiety
  • Improved focus and concentration
  • Better emotional regulation
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Improved sleep quality
  • Reduced symptoms of depression
  • If you're interested in incorporating meditation into your routine, start with just a few minutes a day and gradually increase the duration as you become more comfortable with the practice.
