ADHD Awareness: It's More Than Being "Lazy" or "Disorganized"

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is often misunderstood, despite the numerous resources on the topic. Many people still associate the symptoms with general hyperactivity or chalk them up to being forgetful or lazy. This misunderstanding can be especially harmful to children and teens, who internalize criticism and begin to believe something is fundamentally wrong with them.

What ADHD Actually Looks Like

ADHD manifests differently in everyone, but common experiences include:

  • Difficulty sustaining attention on tasks that aren't immediately engaging
  • Impulsivity in speech, actions, or decisions
  • Difficulty with time management and organization
  • Emotional dysregulation and sensitivity to rejection
  • Hyperfocus on activities of high interest
  • Restlessness that may be physical or mental
  • ADHD in Children vs. Adults

In children, ADHD often shows up as difficulty sitting still, following instructions, or waiting their turn. In adults, it may look more like chronic lateness, difficulty finishing projects, or struggles with maintaining relationships.

    The Impact of Misunderstanding

When ADHD is dismissed as laziness or lack of discipline, the consequences are real:

  • Lowered self-esteem and self-worth
  • Shame and self-blame
  • Underperformance relative to potential
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Increased risk of anxiety and depression
  • How Therapy Helps

Therapy for ADHD focuses on developing practical strategies for managing symptoms, building self-awareness, and addressing the emotional impact of living with ADHD. Approaches may include CBT, coaching, mindfulness training, and family therapy.

If you or your child is struggling with ADHD, know that support is available. Understanding and managing ADHD is possible with the right help.
