3 Habits That Could Be Affecting Your Mental Health

Oftentimes, when we think about what could harm our mental health, our minds go to major life events -- the loss of a job, the end of a relationship, or the death of a loved one. But small habits that often go unnoticed can also play a significant role in how we feel day to day.

1. Excessive Screen Time

We live in a digital world, and while technology has many benefits, too much screen time can negatively impact your mental health. Research has linked excessive screen use to:

  • Increased anxiety and depression
  • Poor sleep quality
  • Reduced attention span
  • Social comparison and lower self-esteem
  • Decreased physical activity
  • Try setting boundaries around your screen use, especially before bedtime and during meals.

    2. Neglecting Sleep

Sleep is foundational to mental health, yet many people don't prioritize it. Chronic sleep deprivation can lead to:

  • Increased irritability and mood swings
  • Difficulty concentrating and making decisions
  • Heightened stress response
  • Greater vulnerability to anxiety and depression
  • Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night and establish a consistent bedtime routine.

    3. People-Pleasing

Constantly putting others' needs before your own may seem selfless, but it can take a serious toll on your mental health. People-pleasing often leads to:

  • Burnout and resentment
  • Loss of identity and personal boundaries
  • Increased anxiety about others' perceptions
  • Feelings of being taken advantage of
  • Learning to say no and prioritizing your own needs isn't selfish -- it's necessary for your well-being.

If you notice these habits in your own life, small changes can make a big difference. And if you're struggling, a therapist can help you develop healthier patterns.
